How to Hang Christmas Lights on a Shingle Roof
With the holiday season approaching, if you have a shingle roof it is vital to know the right way to hang your holiday lights to avoid any damage to your home’s roofing shingles. There are a number of options that can be utilized to decorate your home in style, both easily and safely.
Shingle Tabs
Shingle tabs offer two different hole sizes, with a larger hole for C9 lights and a smaller hole for C7 lights. Place one light bulb into each shingle tab making sure that every bulb has its own tab. This will ensure that your lights hang straight. Once assembled, slide the tabs under the roofing shingles, making sure they are securely placed and do not move from side to side. These tabs can also be placed under the gutters if desired. For removal, simply glide the tab out from under the shingle and carefully wrap the bulb and tab together as a unit. This way your lights will be ready for the coming year.
All-In-One Clips
Carefully place light bulb, either C7 or C9 into the clip securely. Icicle lights will also work with these types of clips. These clips can be positioned on a gutter, following the manufacturer’s directions. When the holidays are over, carefully remove the clip and light as an entire unit and wrap for storage.
Things to Avoid When Hanging Christmas Lights on a Shingle Roof
When hanging lights on a shingle roof, there are a few things to avoid. First, avoid attaching lights to your roofing shingles with staples. Puncturing shingles with even the smallest holes will reduce the integrity of the shingles, making your roof susceptible to leaks. Second, avoid walking on a shingle roof, no matter what type of material the shingles are constructed from. Shingles are susceptible to damage from pressure, however if you must walk on your roof, try to step in the center of the shingles, and not where they overlap. For added safety, try to avoid placing lights when there is snow or ice present on the ground or on the roof. (This is usually not an issue in South Florida.) Focusing on safety first will ensure a happy holiday season and a beautiful home.
