Protect Your Roof Tiles When Decorating Your Home for the Holidays
This is the time of year when people begin to get into the holiday spirit, even here in South Florida. Nothing shouts winter like Santa’s sleigh on top of a roof. While you do not have to worry about snowy or icy conditions, there are steps to take that will protect your roof tiles from damage this holiday season. At SK Quality Roofing, our goal is to provide you with information to make decorating your home safe and fun.
Always wear the right type of shoes before setting foot on your roof. A plain pair of sneakers or tennis shoes is the best choice to minimize damage to your roof tiles and ensure safe footing.
Check all decorations and lights for proper functioning before you head up to the rooftop. Plug in your lights while on the ground to change for any burned out bulbs. Inflate any blow up decorations to ensure they are still in working order.
While we are on the subject of lights, ensure that you are using UL listed electrical cords, and not some cheap ones from the corner 5 and 10 store. The last thing you want to deal with is faulty wiring when you turn on all those holiday lights.
Use the anchoring hooks that came with your inflatable figures to attach to your roof. L-hooks and rope can also work to attach these blow-up decorations that will provide a festive look to your home.
Pre-mount your decorations on plywood for easy display on your roof.
Ensure that your ladder is sturdy by carefully checking each rung as you go up. Make sure that it is positioned firmly on solid ground.
Do not carry items up the ladder – carry up a rope and lower it down for someone to attach the decorations for you to pull up to the roof. Always have a helper on the ground!
Pre-measure first to determine how many strings of light you need for your roof. If possible, do all your decorating on top of your roof at one time. The least amount of times that you have to walk on your roof, the better it is for your roof tiles.
Keep an eye out for loose or broken roof tiles while decorating. For some people, this is the only check of their roof all year. Ensure that there is no damage that has been done during the rainy season. If you find any problems, call an expert.
At SK Quality Roofing, we are here to provide guidance and help with any type of roofing needs. From roof maintenance to repairs to new roofs, we can help. Have a question? Simply ASK SK for the answer. Have a happy and safe holiday.
